What is the CGS?

  • Medical insurance

Who’s Eligible?

General requirements include:

  • Non-Chinese nationality in good mental and physical health

  • Educational qualifications:

    • Undergraduate: high school diploma, age under 25

    • Master’s: bachelor’s degree, age under 35

    • PhD: master’s degree, age under 40 

  • Language proficiency: For Chinese‑taught programs, HSK 3 (UG) or HSK 4 (Master’s/PhD); for English‑taught, IELTS/TOEFL per university requirements 

Some universities, such as UCAS, may require higher HSK levels or English proficiency depending on program language 

Required Documents

A typical CGS application entails submitting:

  • Completed CGS application form

  • Valid passport

  • Notarized diplomas and academic transcripts

  • Language certificates: HSK or IELTS/TOEFL

  • Pre-admission letter from the university

  • Study plan/research proposal (200–800 words depending on level)

  • Two recommendation letters (for graduate programs)

  • Health exam report and non-criminal record 

Universities might also ask for art portfolios or China university scholarship guardian documents if the applicant is under 18 .

Timeline & How to Apply

For the 2025/2026 cycle:

  • Applications opened around October–November 2024

  • CGS portal deadline commonly mid-February 2025 Embassy review follows February–March

  • University and CSC final decisions arrive by July–August 2025 

  • New academic year typically begins September 2025
